From its inception, the documentary Frisbee: The Life and Death of a Hippie Preacher about the life of Lonnie Frisbee has attempted to bridge the gap between two groups on opposite sides of a lot of issues and arguments - the evangelical Christian and the gay communities. The documentary has played at various mainstream film festivals (Newport Beach, Mill Valley, San Francisco Independent, New York Underground, Philadelphia Gay & Lesbian) as well as such venues as Fuller Seminary's Reel Spirituality Conference, Christian music festivals and a number of conservative churches.

To be sure, part of Frisbee's appeal is its ability to maneuver adeptly through the multiple themes and issues without being heavy-handed.

  • Are you mesmerized by miracle stories? The movie takes seriously the claims made by Lonnie's friends.
  • Do you believe that all that faith healing stuff is nonsense? The filmmaker understands that, and went to great lengths to garner the rights to a clip from the documentary Marjoe (1972) to make that very point.
  • Do you believe that homosexuality is a sin? So do the majority of Lonnie's friends.
  • Do you believe that someone can be gay and Christian? The filmmaker interviewed many of the leaders of that movement.

As Variety reported, the documentary comes from a progressive Christian perspective, but it doesn't proselytize or have an agenda.
